Charitable Care
Charitable care is at the heart of our mission—providing charitable support to our residents in need. We are proud that since our founding in 1928, we have never asked a resident to leave one of our care communities because they had outlived their resources to pay for their care. In 2023 alone, Presbyterian SeniorCare Network provided $2.6 million in charitable care across our Network.
In addition to charitable care, Presbyterian SeniorCare Network also covers the cost of unreimbursed care. Unreimbursed care is the difference between what is charged and what we receive from payers, such as Medical Assistance and insurers. In 2023, unreimbursed care totaled $27.8 million.
Capital Improvements and Campaigns
We believe all older adults deserve clean, safe housing at every stage of their aging journey, and no matter where they are on the socioeconomic scale. Our housing options help seniors of all backgrounds to age in place with dignity, while also keeping them connected to community resources.
Thanks to the generosity of many donors, in 2019 we exceeded our $3 million capital improvement campaign goal to build Woodside Place of Washington, the first freestanding dementia-specific assisted living community in Washington County.
Donors helped create the Hanna HealthCare Center at our Longwood at Oakmont campus; updated interior furnishings and added a covered driveway entry at Southmont on our Washington Campus; and enabled a complete transformation of Westminster Place on the Oakmont Campus, including upgrades to the apartments, dining rooms, common areas, outdoor gardens and walking paths.
Our most vulnerable community members—low-income seniors—have benefited from other donor-funded capital improvements, including renovations and refurbishments at our more than 30 supportive, affordable housing communities for seniors and those living with disabilities across the region.
Special Projects, Programs and Services
Donors have led the way with funding many innovative programs and services for our residents and team members. For residents living with dementia, donors have helped us provide LifeLoop, a user-friendly computer system for seniors, at all of our Network campuses. Donors have enthusiastically supported lifestyle-engagement projects that help our residents live life to the fullest each day. Among them are computer kiosks in our affordable housing communities, craft supplies and gardening tools for our personal care residents, iPads and onsite entertainment for our skilled nursing communities, and more!
And thoughtful donors have opened their hearts to help our dedicated team members throughout the Network. The PSCN Employee Emergency Loan (PEEL) program provides an emergency relief system of interest-free, short-term loans for eligible employees. During the coronavirus pandemic, a special PEEL Childcare Assistance Loan was created to help employees with school-aged children to pay for emergency childcare services due to school or childcare facility closures.
